Can
Versus I Can’t
Many of us find ourselves saying, “I just can’t do that.”
It may be about something we just don’t want to do right now, or dread doing but know it has to be done. Or simply cannot do it because we are physically or mentally unable.
When I hear, or say the words ‘I can’, invariably the little red engine from the nursery rhyme reading time of my life comes to mind. It says over and over, “I think I can. I think I can. I think I can…”
And I choose to think…
We can.
Because it is so not about ‘I’, ever. We, ‘can’, because He gives us the strength and will to do so - or the gift to discern to know when we cannot. Or in some cases (like mine), He hits us with the proverbial baseball bat until we realize that what we thought we could do, is not something we can, nor should, do anymore.
It is so long since I have thought about doing anything without His help. In this I find great peace and joy when I realize, or become aware, that He is, of course, helping…
Always.
It is a sad mystery to me that I know so many people that do not believe this. I suppose it is mostly a ‘me’ thing. Either we think it is all about me, or we have reached the depths of some despair where we do not believe He, Who accompanies us in every step of our lives and indeed made us everything we are, we do not even consider asking the Source of Life for help.
We are awash in our Creator, Who made us in His Image and Likeness. After we failed so many times as His chosen people He came as one of us to set the record straight. The magnitude of this cannot be explained by the number of stars in the sky. His mercy is overwhelming. His love fills every particle of any and every thing, down to the known smallest, the Quark. His exclusive Divinity exceeds any definition. There is no other God but Him in all His resplendent Triune-ness.
So when we are faced with any type of challenge and we wonder if ‘I can’, we must stop for a moment. At that very point remember it is not me that is being asked to climb that mountain.
It is we. Him and us. And so ‘we’, can!
Because the ‘us’ is way more than Him and me, it is all of us Created in His Image and Likeness.
And…
After all…
with Him…
Anything is possible!
